Both the name Santa Claus and Saint Nick are based on Saint Nicholas of Germany. He used to go around during rather harsh times economically for the people. He would drop gold down their chimneys to help them through hard times. Claus I believe was his last name (santa means saint in English). So in essence, he was real (though dead now) but the character we know (the jolly guy with the red clothes and elves and all that) is no where close to the real deal (he was often hungry and poor himself, but he gave his money away anyway).

This may come as a bit of a shock and I hate to have to tell you this but Santa Claus as we know him was really invented by the Coca Cola corporation way back when.

the myth of santa clause was portrayed after a real person, but the story of him taking gifts to children on christmas is obviously fake.
