Hey Cheerio lafs,
I have found the easiest way is not to use a mortar and pestle, but a simple wooden muddle (looks like a small baseball bat). This way you crush the mint with the sugar - IN THE GLASS! There is no need to clean out any other utensils.
Add ice.
Add favorite light colored rum.
I like the brightness of a squeeze of fresh lime. You can't really tell, but it seems to brighten-up all the flavors!
Happy Drinking!
James

Use fresh mint, white rum, ripe limes and not too much sugar. Muddling the mint, limes, sugar and ice in the begining will help with mixing the flavors.
An interesting twist is adding a splash of dark rum for sweetness.

We put the mint in a mortar and smush it with some sugar using a pestal. That way all the oils come out of the mint leaves and the sugar dissolves better.

I think you have to have all those people dancing around you as you bruise the mint. That is what it shows on the commercials anyway. Be sure they all synchronize their booty shaking
