I can't understand why so many people have a problem with gay marriage. I know the bible says it is wrong, but not everyone believes in the bible. I don't see christians trying to make it illegal for buddist or pegans to be married(the bible says they should not even live). They beleive differently. Should atheist not be allowed to marry because they don't beleive in the bible? If you don't understand why they want to be married so what? You are not the one that has to understand. If you don't want to see it or it makes you sick, don't go to the wedding. Without quoting the bible or giving any religious reason, why do you think gay marriage is wrong?

Kimber, About the two plugs don't go together, I guess you don't know that besides a penis men do still have 2 sockets!! As for not wanting your kids to see gay people making out well I see straight people making out in public and I don't want my kids seeing that because I don't want my kids seeing ANY adults with their tongues down someone's throat! As for seeing gays with the kid they adopted, some gay people don't adopt, they have their own kids with a surrogate or donor!
Don't anyone pay any attention to Julia, she is a whack job!!
Obviously there's a few people who can't read cause the asker specifically said they didn't want any religious answers!!
Gay people aren't any different than straight people, they love, laugh and they bleed! Leave them alone and worry about your own lives and marriages!
I know I am not against gay marriage but I just had to answer your question to set some of these idiots straight!

The problem I see with marriage is that is was suppose to be a union under God and it has turned into a government involved legal contract. With marriage under God, many people believe that gay individuals are not living their lives under God so they should not be allowed to be married under God. I can not say why people are gay because I do not know, but I do believe that there are gay individuals who believe in God and are troubled with their sexuality because of how the Bible we read today is interpreted. This leads me to believe that having homosexual feelings isn't a choice.
Now, I believe that being married should be under God not under the government. The government should regulate taxes and tax breaks from the living situations of individuals NOT whether they are married or not. If 2 sisters live together for 50 years, they pay individual taxes, even though they share a house. Anyone can have a ceremony before their friends and family and proclaim their undoubting affection and love for each other, it just won't be legal by the government to regulate taxes and next of kin.
I believe that the government is in a tangled mess because they dipped their finger in a holy ceremony and now they have to deal with the reprocussions of it. I do not believe that the government should change the views of marriage; to me that would be an infringment on the sanctity of the ceremony. I believe the government should get out of the way of marriage and put the rules and regulations else where for ALL AMERICANS.

isn't gay marriage a hoot. there is nothing wrong about it until an election year, then it is the worst thing since um... something bad.
of course the reason people do bring it up and feel so strongly about is their particular religion which forbids it as wrong on a moral basis
but the reason it holds legitimacy in the sense of civil order is that first of all there are legal texts and precedence which either forbid it or have classical definitions of marriage.
another reason which gives it foothold is that gay marriage would reverse many years of social precedence in western (and many other) cultures, and some are worried that this could undermine the fabric of society.
again this is mainly a religious issue. specially an issue which is often undertaken by those who don't fully understand the concept of religion and try to enforce it upon others. if it wasn't for the religious zealots we wouldn't hear so much about it.

The gay marriage debate is currently raging in the United States mostly because until recently, gay people didn't ask for equal rights regarding marriage. Until just a few decades ago, homosexuals wouldn't even come out of the closet due to the lack of understanding and violence toward the homosexual orientation.
It will take time, but recognized gay marriages will happen.
Julia: Always a pleasure to engage conversation with you.
Gay people have been marrying each other for decades now. For several years various christian churches even conduct the ceremony. This debate isn't about gay marriages happening. This debate is about the government treating them equal to straight marriages. No state legislature or proposed federal legislation has attempted to ban gay marriages from happening. No matter what your ministers and republican representatives have told you. This is certainly about equal rights. No group of people has the right to restrict rights of another group of people in this country.
The definition of marriage does not require changing . It only requires gay people to be included.
The open door theory of why people shouldn't allow gay marriage is absurd. Incest, pedophilia, bigamy, polygamy, bestiality and necrophilia all have reasons for them not only being wrong, but illegal. They all have "victims," and most have issues with "consent." These are not similar issues to two homosexuals vowing to spend the rest of their lives, loving and caring for each other and having the government recognize it for what it is. I have stated on numerous occasions that this is just fearmongering, not rational justification for discrimination.
45 of 50 states... sigh. I wonder how you would have felt after the civil war when MOST people felt slavery wasn't worth fighting about. I wonder how you would have felt 50 years ago when MLK was fighting for equal rights and MOST Americans didn't think it was really an issue. I wonder how you would have felt when women fought for equal rights... and MOST Americans didn't think it was a good idea... have you ever read the reasons people gave to back being against women's rights? They sound just like yours.
You appear to be quite an intelligent and educated person. I just don't understand how you think that equal rights only belong to heterosexuals. I don't understand how you can think that equal rights have anything to do with sexual matters at all.
As always, it's a pleasure responding to your answer.

Doesn't it depend on what faith you have? I refuse to follow anything from anyone except what is in my heart. I don't even care about others lives and don't really care to answer such a question but I couldn't refuse myself. For people to quote the bible, it's kind of harsh to sit and throw stones when in fact it does say not to throw stones which a few have done here. I bet their glass homes have heavy draped curtains. If gay's want to be married, then so be it....I'm sure back in the old days way before time, it was happening then as well. Amazing whats in one's closet isn't it? If we were all alike, wouldn't it be a dull world? The way man has changed the bible tells me that I'd rather believe in what I want as well. I'm not following what I don't believe in and thats everyone's right to choose that. I agree with you on how silly it sounds not to go to someones wedding just because they are gay... do you like the person? then go, if you don't, then shut up and move on

"Without quoting the bible or giving any religious reason, why do you think gay marriage is wrong?"
Right there you knock out most of the arguments against it. Basicly a stand against gay marriage is almost always on religious grounds.
I did have one interesting response to a question I asked saying gay people joined in a legal ceremony giving them the exact same rights as married couples is fine, but dont call it marriage becasue marriage is between a man and a woman.
Thats honestly the first time I ever heard that argument.

Gay Marriage is an oxymoron. It has no more reality than a "female" car or a free market communist. You can say it three times, click your heels but it will never make it so.
The essence of marriage is a union between a man and a woman, (in Christianity it is a three part contract, a man, a woman and God) to create a family and raise children. Two people of the same gender do not qualify.
One final thought, Christians can no more make it illegal for gays to be married than Christians can make it illegal for you to call a horse a Chevy. (You can say it all you want to but the horse will always be a horse and not a car.)

The answer is simple. Marriage by definition is the union of a man and a woman. If gays would like to create something called "Egairram", by all means let them do it. Gays think they have stumbled on something new. Being gay has been around since before the bible and even god existed. The reason marriage is defined in the bible was to allow us to create and maintain the non-barbarian society we try to live today.
Marriage "produces" children and family. Being gay, is just that, being gay; nothing is produced since its entirely for pleasure.

Marriage is between a man and a woman. Genesis 2:18-24, Adam did not find a suitible mate out of everything God created so God made Eve from Adams rib. She is to be him partner close to his heart.
God will not bless a union he deemed unholy for God is a Holy God. Leviticus 18:21/Romans 1:21-28/1 Corinthians 6:9-10 1 Timothy 1:8-11

It doesnt bother me any if gays get married. What they do is between them and God, they have nothing to do with you or I. It would be different if people wanted to marry children, then the adult would be hurting the child. If God chooses not to honor the marriage, that is up to Him, Im sure there are massive amounts of straight marriages He doesn't approve of also but I never see people up in arms about them. I mean everyone seems to forget that other than for the case of marital infidelity, we should never divorce our spouses, and if we do and remarry, we commit adultery and/or cause the other to do so. So if we Christians are going to protest Gay marriages, then we should start protesting re-marriages also.
