We have had Toby for about 48 hours now and he has only ate one bowl of dog food. We have tried 3 different types of og food, 2 dry and 1 wet. He just looks at it and wals away. Toby is still somewhat active and goes for walks. he sleeps a lot but he plays hard when he is awake.

The people who had him first I don't think they really took all that good care of him. People that we have talked to about him said that when he was with the other family he didn't walk around much and didn't look to good. One of them said that he is a whole new dog now that we have him but I still don't understand why he won't eat.

Does anyone have this kinda dog? If so can you tell me what all I need to know to help me raise this dog. We love him to death and would not want anything to happen to him. So please give me a few heads up.

I did some looking on the net and I found that they like freash foods. So I made him some eggs with chicken and boy did he eat like hehasn't in 2 days. So I know now that they really don't like dog food. And after some of the stuff that I have found on the net about dog foods I don't think I will feed both my dogs dog food again. Its gross what they do to it.

I travel a lot with my family and often won't eat the first day or so after arriving somewhere new. Maybe your new Cavalier is nervous and just settling in, particularly with new owners.

On the other hand, I absolutely can't resist eggs. Sounds like your dog has similar tastes.

My favorite dry food seems to be Royal Canin: http://www.royalcanin.com/produits/gb_chien_mini.asp.

I have two Cavaliers. Rupert eats like there's no tomorrow; and Annabelle might be a close match to yours--she eats now and then (always has since I got her at 8 weeks). I feed both of them Beneful (though, as you may be considering, I've gone the whole health food diet and range of dog food selections). I feed twice a day (1/2 cup of food). If Annabelle doesn't look like she's going to eat the food, I pick it up and put her dish on the counter (otherwise Rupert will eat it). I then give her the same dish at the next feeding.

If your dog is in all other ways healthy (in addition to a recent exam by a vet), then I would just let him eat when he's hungry. If he doesn't want the food, put it back in the bag and serve it at the next meal time. Eventually he'll get the picture (it seems as though he's trying to "train" you and it should be the other way around; Annabelle will always eat a treat--but that's not the routine or the diet I'm trying to establish). I feel quite confident that he won't starve.

Dog feed twice a day only - one meal in the morning and another one at night - 12 hours apart. Normally when dogs arrive in a new environment, it won't eat a lot bacause of the following possibilities, maybe:
1. He does not trust you yet, or
2. You feed him with food he never learned to eat before, or
3. He is tired from travel.

Let him rest for the day and night and next morning, feed him with a few cooked minced pork liver on your hand.

Wait another day to see if he eats. Dogs can go for a couple days without eating and be ok. If still nothing, try a bland diet with rice and some boiled chicken. If still nothing, take the dog to the vet, it may not feel good and thats why it doesnt want to eat. Good luck!
