I think a better question than why do people post rhetorical questions or why do people post things they know are gonna make people mad is why do people respond to them?

While it may be the simple and pathetic action of posting a question on-line, their reasoning is the issue. They get a rise out of stirring up pain and anger in others only to quicken themselves. Tends to stem from a lack of self worth, image or esteem or a combination of all three. They are the leeches of society and need a good therapist and perhaps medication.

People responding to them more than likely have an over abundance of pride, refusing to let it slide they take it personally and react accordingly, lowering themselves down to the questioners level.

They do it for spite, and don't care that God's Word says some pretty heavy things about people who offend one another in the Word on purpose. We are not to offend "in word or deed." Another one says, "Woe unto the world because of offences!" Another says, "If anyone would offend any of my little ones (young Christians), it would be better for him if a millstone were hung from his neck and he were cast into the sea and drowned."
Since there seems to be so little respect for one another on this topic, we'd better learn to be as tolerant and thick-skinned as possible and try to answer the more serious-seeming questions instead of paying attention to the obviously inflammatory ones.

people take religion (or their own views on the subject, positive and negative) very seriously, most get defensive or just feel the need to preach.

To have fun by toying with the mentally unstable people who ask them or to prove to themselves that they're not retarded (when they may or may not be, I won't judge).
