Unfortunately, small dogs, most of the time give no warning they just go for it, must be a small dog issue. Big dogs usually growl or show teeth, but in this situation if the dog has actually attached its self to him...PEPPER SPRAY! there is no option...the only other thing I have heard of is to carry treats, and re-direct the dog as he enters. Throw the dog a bone before during and after he enters...Some owners may not be happy with this, because allot of dogs are sensitive to new foods, or even have allergies, so that they cannot have any other food than what is prescribed. So take caution with the treats, ask owners if it is okay first!!!! If all else fails, PEPPER SPRAY the little **** if it attacks him!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dad was a postman,
tell him to carry the pepper spray and use it. Most cities have laws about unrestrained pets, if an ankle biter goes after your hubby he can refuse to deliver to the house per postal employee practices.. Have him check with his supervisor. The right to refuse service DOES extend to the Post Office. They can inform the customer they need to rent a PO box as the carrier will not deliver to the best of my recollection..

If a dog approaches him in attack mode, screw what anyone says, pepper spray their butts! It doesn't hurt the dog and it will keep him from getting bit! I am really not sure how one can avoid being attacked by a protective dog.....he could try yelling at them, but I think he is going to have to use his pepper spray if he is attacked.

If the dog is in an open yard, tell the owner it must be chained away from the mailbox and if it is in a fenced yard, tell the dog owner to put a mailbox on the outside of the fence if they want their mail.
I love my dog but I would never expect a delivery person to put themselves in danger.
Restrain the dog, move the mailbox or no mail.

He can tell the peolpe that if they dont control thier dog's that he wont be delivering thier mail. I know I have a Rotty and she dont like the trash man.. He's a freaky looking person.. She tries her best to eat him... So I got a letter from the trash company telling me that if she wasnt put up when they came for my trash that I would no longer have trash pick-up... And she in a fence for crying out loud...

spray water mixed with vineager. its not as bad as pepper spray and it will stop the dog from attacking you. this works at my house and i have 14 dogs running around. the owners should have control of their animals anyway. they are making it unsafe for your husband to do his job. good luck

Personally, if your husband did anything to my dog, I would beat him within one inch of his life. So tell him to chill out. He needs to act calm and ignore the dogs; don't make eye contact. If the dogs are clearly in violation of city ordinances, then he should alert the appropriate officials.

Many tiny-but-territorial dogs can be fended off with a little scare. Try leaning towards them and stomping on the ground while yelling, "NO!"

Have him give the dogs treats so they associate him with something positive. The dogs are only doing what comes natural: protecting their territory. He is an intruder, so the dogs associate him with something negative.

I had a friend that was a mail man, and what he found helpful was to pet and love up on his own dogs before he went on his route. He was convinced that their scent on him soothed the other dogs.
