I've used two methods that worked.

1 - Take a treat he likes and hold it above his head so that he has to look up at it. Slowly move it backwards like you are going back and down behind his head. As he moves his head back to follow it his bottom should hit the floor. Say sit when he does. Praise him like crazy and give him the treat immediately. Eventually he should connect the word "sit" to the action.

2 - In a much bigger dog, mind you, I used to pull VERY GENTLY on the front of his collar. Take the front of the collar, where the tags are, and gently pull it up and towards you. The dog's natural reaction is to pull against you (pull his head back and down from you), so he will naturally sit. Again, say the word "sit" as he does it and praise him like crazy and give treats every time he does it. Eventually he will relate the word to the action. Be very careful doing this with a small dog. I used it on my 100 lb pit bull and it worked like a charm. I'm not sure it would be the best idea in a small dog.

Good luck!

Hmmm wish I could help. I didnt train my dog to sit. She just started doing it. My friend asked me if she would sit and when she said it, the dog sat. I gave her a treat (always keep a treat in a pocket or nearby) and that was that.
You could try pressing down on its little bum and as soon as it sits, say "good dog" and give it a treat. Do this over and over.
Or, when it asks you to play, ya know throw a ball or something, say sit first and dont play till the dog sits. But make sure it knows what sit means before you do that.

What a trainer taught me, is to take the treat and hold it over his head, and slowly pass it from his nose over his forehead, and keep going, as he looks up to follow the treat, he will be forced to sit, otherwise he'd fall on his back because they loose their sense of balance - give it a try
