I've never had a professional massage, so I don't know much about it. Is a massage parlor the right place to get a good stress-relieving massage? Are there other options? Is there a way to get something like a gift certificate for a massage, and if so, can I leave the specific type of massage up to the recipient?

Thanks!

Depends where you are, but typically "parlor" indicates the option for sexual behavior - that is NOT a Massage! For the highest skill levels it is best to seek out an Independent Massage Therapist. Employee Massage Therapists have not proven themselves in the field much, typically, and are often right out of school. Independent MT's generally have more experience, expertise, and education. I think it's always good to leave the decision of what kind of massage open to the gift recipient. Any good massage therapist will sit down with your friend and discuss what they need, what they will benefit the most from, and will then be able to customize the massage specifically to them. Employee MT's typically follow a taught routine that does not take into account the specifications of the client.

Try a Swedish massage for your first time, it is conventional massage and not painful at all.
