How likely is it that you'll have another depressive episode when you've already had one?

I'm 24 years old and suffered a severe depressive episode which I'm recovering from now (almost two years later) and I'm worried that it will happen again in the future. I'm still on medication at the minute and will be for probably at least another 6 months, but I'm scared that when I come off the medication I'll relapse, or that I'll be ok for a little while and then it will hit me again.

How likely is it that I'll become depressed again in later life? And is there anything in particular I can do to prevent it?

Hard to say. If you depression is clinical, then there is not much you can do to prevent another episode. If this happens, see your doctor and get back on your medication. Seek additional therapy whenever possible, and others who may suffer form depression and know what you are going through. Good luck.

If you are diagnosed with a depressive disorder, it will always be with you, but it can be controlled. I would suggest going to counseling and resolving whatever issues you can. I would stay on the medication as long as you can, journal, confide in a good friend. Take up a hobby, like excercising is suppose to help. Or read about others' inspiring stories. Take an inventory of what good things are going on in your life and focus on them. Know that depression is a state of mind, and that people may or may not understand.

Im unsure of clinical or chemical imbalance related depression.

But if this is related to an incident or accident, then the best recourse is to talk to your friends. Maybe in real life or on the Internet. Im sure you will soon find yourself occupied and will have less time to even think about the depression.

Remember medicine is only half cure the rest is what you do. Have faith in yourself and assume the "Fighter Attitude". Im sure you will feel the difference. Please feel free to access my 360 page and join the gang (smiles)....

Well it depends on the type of depression and how well you can control it. You may need to find a medicine that has a low dose, but still helps your symptoms. You may have to take something for the rest of your life. Just talk to your doctor and see what s/he thinks is best for you.

IF YOU HAVE MAJOR DEPRESSION CAUSED BY A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE ODDS ARE YOU SHOULD AND WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO TAKE MEDS. AS THERE IS NO CURE FOR CHEMICALLY IMBALANCED DEPRESSION YOU CAN ONLY STABILIZE IT WITH MEDS AND THERAPY. THERE IS NO SHAME IN HAVING TO ALWAYS TAKE MEDS. IF YOU HAD BAD EYES YOU WOULD ALWAYS HAVE TO WEAR GLASSES RIGHT ? I AM 43 AND I HAVE RE-OCCURRING MAJOR DEPRESSION BUT I HAVE BEEN STABLE SINCE 1997.YOU BEST CHANCE FOR STAYING STABLE IS TO FIND A GOOD THERAPIST AND CONTINUE TO SEE HIM/HER EVEN AFTER YOU RESOLVE ANY ISSUES YOU MAY HAVE. ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU YOU WILL BE MUCH BETTER ABLE TO COPE AND HEAL. I STILL TAKE MEDS AND PROBABLY WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO AND I STILL GO TO MY TREAPIST ONCE A MONTH. I STARTED @ 2X A WEEK. CLICK ON MY I-CON IF YOU'D LIKE TO TALK ABOUT THIS FURTHER. GOOD LICK.

I would be very interested in what you have going thru your mind, which seems to bring about this depressive mood. There must be a trigger involved there somewhere. Something that sets of the malady.

check out www.hufa.org. It may give you a handle on why you are depressed. If it is due to low blood sugar, diet changes will help you.

listen to the song "Don't worry, be happy" trust me, this isn't sarcastic. Also go for a walk and keep focused on positive. Remember, people care about you. If they didn't people wouldn't answer your Question.
Keep Happy
