I recently had a charge on my credit card I did not expect. When I called the retailer they say it was for work I had done 10 months ago that had never been billed. It almost seems like this should be their lose for taking so long to bill it.

call your credit card company. ask if they have a specific time limit to post a payment. if they don't give you an answer, contact THEIR boss. Just keep going up until you find out the truth!

I believe the answer is about 12 months.

I'd say call your credit card company and dispute it, put the ball in their court. If you haven't done business with that company for almost a year, then just tell your credit card company that. The company gets to justify collecting on a 300 day old debt to your credit card company.

Your credit card company will take it off your statement and hold it in "limbo" until it gets resolved one way or another, so if you want to take that route, don't pay the full ballance until it's resolved. (I'd say keep up with minimum payments tho, getting tagged a late fee and possible default interest isn't worth the grief)

(You'll probably wind up having to pay it, but think of it as a stupidity tax on their part. It'll cost them time and probably cc fees in handling the dispute. Someone needs to get yelled at in their accounting dept. for holding it so long. Darwinian economics, you're making them a better company!)
