Suddenly, I cant open any of my .bmp file pictures with Internet Explorer.

When I try, all that happens is that a small white box with a red "X" appears in the top left hand corner of the window where the picture should be.

It only happens with the bmp files, and my jpeg picture files all open fine with Internet Explorer.

What's happened, and how can I put it right so that I can open them again?

The empty frames with the little red X’s could be pictures that failed to download. In most cases, this is a problem with an Internet server, not your computer. However, you may have IE set to block pictures.

To unblock pictures being displayed in IE: click Tools, Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. In thee Settings window, scroll down to Multimedia and make sure the box next to “Show Pictures” is checked; if not, click the box to check it and click OK.

Could you have edited the BMP files in a way that might make them unreadable to Explorer? Maybe try upgrading or reinstalling Explorer.
