You need to be accepted to the Naval or Air Force Academy.
Then you will go through months of grueling mental and physical training.
After that you must graduate.

In the Navy you can assist in the Navigation of the ship by being a Quartermaster. Operations Specialists sometimes assist also. If you want to navigate an airplane, you'll need to be a Naval Flight Officer. Also to be fully in charge of navigation in the Navy, you'll need to be an Officer. I suggest looking into ROTC. They'll pay for your College.

QMs and OS are the enlisted ratings that deal with navigation. QMs are the map readers and course plotters. OSs are the operators of the equipment used to navigate. In the Aviation Community, there are Air Traffic Controllers as well.
As an Officer, that would be SWO(Surface Warfare) and NFO(Naval Flight).

to navigate a ship in the Navy you must enter the Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) Program upon completion of your graduation from a 4 year approved school. From that point you can go to a ship and if appointed the correct orders be designated as the ships navigation officer..
Enlistedmen rans e1-e4 actaully rive the ship though
As far as being a pilot, you have to select that program and pass it upon succesful graduation from a 4 yr approved school

Oddly enough, the job's called Navigator. For both seagoing and aircraft (larger aircraft) There's an officer on board trained as a navigator. He calculates speed, distance, time etc.
