John's first encounter with Jesus was while both of them were still in their mothers' wombs, at which time John, apparently recognizing his Saviour, leaped for joy (Luke 1:44). Much later, while John is baptizing, he refers to Jesus as "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world", and "the Son of God" (John 1:29,36). Later still, John is thrown in prison from which he does not return alive. John's definite knowledge of Jesus as the son of God and saviour of the world is explicitly contradicted by Luke 7:18-23 in which the imprisoned John sends two of his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who is coming, or do we look for someone else?"
Was John just confused? Maybe prison life screwed his mind up?

Outside the Bible, there is nothing to indicate John had ever heard of Jesus, and there's tons of contemporary archaeological evidence that proves John was a real person, but none whatsoever regarding Jesus.

it ought to were impossible that Jesus ought to have easily generic John the Baptist. They each and every had diverse non secular movments. all of us understand from Josephus that John replaced right into a lot extra properly generic than Jesus. Later Gospel money owed probable wrote in a lot extra of a connection to provide some credibility to the Christian circulate on the prompt. John ought to have had his own diciples close to to help him out. with the exception of Jesus probable believed that both he and John were to be sacrificed for differnet yet similar motives. i'm particular he grieved even as John died, yet there replaced into no longer plenty he ought to do by that factor. you won't be able to bail someone out in that society and time.

John the Baptist & Jesus Christ are painted together by Master Artist of 1600's, MURILLO. Most importantly as children playing together.
Yes, John knew that Jesus was the One to come. When John was asking this question. He was just reconfirming. That was Lukes interpretation.

John was preaching as the Spirit of God led him, and he quickly realized that Jesus was the lamb of God / Prophet / the Annoitned One.
But did John fully understand that Jesus was THE ONE?? And you see John the Baptist, like Peter, -both having their doubts and Peter even denying Jesus 3 times.
Just think of it as moments in the flesh of doubt.

John the baptizer was Jesus cousin and they were only six months apart. I am sure they knew each other and what their purposes would be since they were small children. At twelve Jesus was preaching in the temple.

Jesus and John were cousins. You would think they knew each other quite well. Since he was aware of Jesus in the womb, you would think as children he would still be aware of Jesus' divine mission and calling.

it was not contradicted!
Think a moment as if you were prison, and word came to you that your cousin was speaking to large crowds and you had just baptized him not long ago.How would you know that he had not been killed, or someone just impersonating him. How would you find out the truth? that he was who he said he was. Only by sending someone on the outside that you trusted to find out. And returning with the answers.

John was doing diffrent work than Jesus. He was baptisizing in his name, he was the previously prophesied man whom was to be the messenger before Jesus. When he had heard of this mans works, his question was asked to assure Jesus was the one he was to be, and not another man who was acting not on God authority. I believe it was before his inprisonment, and before john baptized Jesus.
