Most pit bulls can be nice pets, but many of them are unreliable, and just anything can set them off...IT IS NOT USUALLY THE OWNER"S FAULT!!! Or just how they are raised... It CAN be the breeders fault.

NO i do not think that all pit bulls are attack dogs. Just like not all rottweilers are not attack dogs, it all just depends on how you raise the dog. I mean for heavens sake a little snouchzer could be a attack dog it just depends on how you raise them and how you treat them. Over the years horror movies like Kugo and the other movies where dogs are thought of to be vicous animals that will attack at any moment. This is not true. Personally i have had both dogs over the years and i would not take back anymoment of having them. They are affectionate, protective, and they are the most beautiful dogs you have ever seen. These dogs are being over rated by people that live in cities that have no idea most of the time. I mean do you ever see on the news a chiwawa biting a person and having to go to the hospital, or a lab biting a person, no. The news only highlights the rottweilers and pit bulls and makes them seem like the worst dogs ever. I mean none of this is true. These dogs are the best dogs that anyone could ever have and i hope that they do not make these dogs seem horible just because of movies and the news.

I think a lot of them can be. Most of the articles I've read or seen on the news involve young children. It seems like a lot of pit bulls can react badly with children and lots of the incidents seem to involve young children. I have a feeling probably a lot of the times there were injuries or fatalities, the dogs were possibly provoked by the children, maybe they pulled their tails or hurt them or somehow frightened the dogs. I do think young children and dogs should always be supervised, but also pit bulls should not be around young children in the first place in my opinion. Even if a pit bull has done well in the past with a child, why take an unnecessary risk?

Also, to the poster about cocker spaniels, yes, they do bite a lot, but that doesn't mean that pit bulls aren't also biters as well (both are considered aggressive breeds), and when pit bulls bite, their bites can be fatal: "Several dog breeds have been identified for their role in fatal dog bite attacks, including pit bull breeds, malamutes, chows, Rottweilers, huskies, German shepherds and wolf hybrids.1,2,8 From 1979 to 1988, pit bull breeds accounted for more than 41 percent of dog biterelated fatalities, three times as many as German shepherds. Info from: American Family Physician, http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010415/1567.html
I'm not saying that pit bulls aren't great dogs, but I do hope those with young children will consider holding off on adding pit bulls to the family until their children are a little older.

Any dog can be made to attack. Pit-bulls are sensationalized in the media currently; in the '90s it was Rotweilers, in the '80s were Dobermans, in the '70s it was german shepards. Statistical research has proven that any dog is a product of its environment, and how it is raised... The fact that criminal elements have chosen the pit-bull breeds recently, and the media has sensationalized it in the "Gansta Rap" culture combined with the lack of canine understanding and common sense in most people all contribute to the misunderstanding of pit-bulls. Did you know that "Petey" (the dog in The Little Rascals) was a Pit-bull?? In the '50s and '60s Pit-bulls were considered the "all American" dog. Currently, according to the American Humane Society, the breed with the record of most bites is the Labradore Retriever...

No, not all pit-bulls are attack dogs. Although some dogs are naturally agressive, sometimes it's the owners that bring it out of the dogs. If you train it to be kind, and you shower your dog with love, then no the pit-bull would not attack you, because obviously it wasn't taught that way. Some people happen to own pit-bulls, and are cruel to animals, therefore the dog learns from it's master, and pick up on his or her actions.

Personally I would not trust a pit bull or any dog in that category of dog. I have heard of dogs being wonderful and all of a sudden they attack for no apparent reason. My son had a German shepherd and it was trained from eight weeks not to attack someone going for its food by having people touch him while he was eating and many other ways and he attacked a friends toddler that had come over and seriously hurt the child and he was euthanized. That was a horrible thing for my sons family to go through both for the terrible thing that happened to the child and also the loss of their pet. I am sorry I would not feel safe owning that breed of dogs.

I own two pitbuls. I keep them in my house. The bad names are given to them based on the bad stuff you hear about them. Other dog breeds bite and attack. It sounds worse if a pit does it. It is all in how they are raised.
My pits are registered and full blooded. The "bad" dogs are usually the results of breeders breeding the pits within the same gene pools. (inbreeding). They are sold for decent money, so the more puppies they can get, the better. Bad genes can mess up a dogs' genetics.
It is also important to establish who is boss right away with your dog. The minute they get out-of-hand put an immediate stop to it.
Let them know you are boss. This is true with any dog, though.

I think any dog can be trained to be an attack dog. It is sad that Pit-bulls have been said to be attack dogs in general. It is actually the human that owns the dog, that trains the dog to be a mean attack dog.
If we could stop the "trainer" and forgive the bad name of the breed, there would be less fear of the breed.

I have a big dippy 95 lb rottie cross. She's not a pit bull, but lots of people think they are mean. (she's far from it)
My Mom has a pit bull cross, and he is a big wimp.
So, no, I can definately say, not all pit's are attack dogs.
Just stereotyping.

I do not believe that pit bulls are attack dogs. They are just dogs. I have one and she doesn't attack.

No pit-bulls can be nice or mean,It depends on how you raise them...Dont hit them or kick them,Get a news paper and roll it up if they do something bad (As in bite, get up on the table ETC.) Then tap them on the nose with it,But remember this only works if you catch them. Whil training it to walk on a leash dont hit it for going in the street let it lead you, But when its going in the street dont let it call it and when it comes bend down and tell it "No, No street Bad dog" I found that they respond better like that I did that with my pit when she was a pup and she dosent try unless I lead her to it in witch she still trys not to go in the street.
