"Belief like any other moving body follows the path of least resistance."

Do you agree or disagree? Why?

I personally don't agree with it, but there are many people who chose to go trough the path of least resistance, that is how people end having someone else faith. I tent to go my way and learn what I know I need to learn. I chose to have my own path and faith.

If Samuel Butler meant that most humans find it easier to believe something that is tangible or they can understand easily, then I think that statement is correct. It may not be a correct belief, but it would still be a belief. Now, on the other hand, Christians, Muslims, and Jews (among others) often feel like they are swimming upstream when it comes to their belief. On this board at any given time, you will find many people insulting others for their religious beliefs. In these cases, belief trudges forward against the path of great resistance.

I personally disagree - if I were choosing the path of least resistance, I wouldn't be on a path that requires so much research and study.

I'd be on a path that had a revealed holy text with all the laws and rules laid out for me already, and people to tell me what that text says and what it means and how to follow it.

I believe that is true to certain people in certain situations but is not applicable as a broad generalization. Some people put a lot of energy into following strict dogmas and others give tirelessly to a cause they believe in. Examples are Ghandi and Mother Theresa who did not follow the path of least resistance in spiritual and political matters. Bono of U2 also could just sit back and enjoy his money but dedicates a great deal of his life to bring people together in support of his poverty causes. However, in our general life, I believe we are apathetic and choose to take things at face value instead of spending the time to really investigate for ourselves. An example of this is just accepting what we hear on the news or from a politicians just because we are too lazy to spend the time to search for the truth.

Believing in Jesus certainly is not the path of least resistance! I'm required by people to tell them why I believe what I do, and am always being questioned about it. The way I believe is totally going against what the majority of the world is doing. Everywhere I look, I can see something against what I believe, no, believing in Jesus is not the path of least resistance. Not believing would be............

No. I disagree. People are dying for their beliefs every single day. That hardly seems like the path of least resistance.

I disagree. To believe that is Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins is a belief of your whole being. You hear the gospel then you can believe God's Word because it tells you that you are a sinner on your way to hell but God has made away of escape. Romans 5: 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: Romans 10: 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

in my opinion the Bible is like a "road map" back to god..if we follow our own path without guidance then we will get lost and go elsewhere.....
