1.) thumping is good,,, if it sounds hollow,,, it's good.
2.) does it feel heavier than is seems,,, that means that there is more water in it making it fresher.
3.) look for what called the "ground spot" it's where the melon sat on the ground. if it's white,,, DO NOT buy it,,, if it's yellow,,, it's good to go.
If all these factors pass the test,,, you will have yourself a perfectly ripe, juicy and sweet watermelon!

I've heard to thump it and if it sounds hollow then it should be a good melon

Us Texans thump them if it sounds hallow its ready. another way is if the stem is dried up its good, still green no way. I prefer the thumping. I have had better luck.

Slap it gently. The sound that it makes will tell you how ripe it is. The deeper the sound (and more hollow), the more ripe it is.
