Newcastle was one of the first beers I enjoyed -- so, you're well on your way to enjoying the finer beers that are out there. Rogue Brewery (in Oregon, but distributed throughout the U.S.) puts out great beers. Rogue Hazlenut Brown is excellent, and might appeal to you. I also love Rogue Chocolate Stout. If you are in the North Carolina region, the Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery makes wonderful dark beers. Duck Rabbit has a wonderful brown beer, as well as an excellent porter and great stout. One way to get into better beers is to find a restaurant/bar in your area that has a lot of different beers on tap. Use the internet to search for local beer bars in your area. Ask the bartender for recommendations, and begin expanding your pallette. If you're really ready for an adventure, start sampling the wonderful world of Belgian beer -- there's nothing like the hundreds of wonderful beers brewed in that small country.

My favorite is Newcastle too. If you like the nut brown, you probably like other malty, strong, sweeter beers. So you might not like the India Pale ales, which are hoppier--more bitter.
You should look for Red Ales, they'll be on the sweet side, or look for something more balanced, like a Fat Tire.
Check out Magic Hat. It's becoming available at more places, and their seasonal beers are bold, and the best around.

First thing, drop all light beer, it is a crime against nature. Newcastle Ale is great, but expensive. There is a porter made in Wilkes-Barre PA that is very good (Dark, but sweeter than Guinness) called Pocono Porter. For a less robust but very flavorful beer try Pilsner Urquel out of the Czech Republic.

Newcastle is a great beer, so if you are going to try something new, you could go with other beers that can hold their own next to any microbrews such as Bass, Harp or Smithwicks. Or try a beers that recently graduated from "microbrew", Sierra Nevada or Anchor Steam.

I'm not sure where you're located, but some truly great beers come out of California...
Mendocino County Brewery makes:
--White Hawk IPA
--Blue Heron Pale Ale
--Red Tail Ale
--Black Hawk Stout
All of which are truly magnificent beers! If you have a Trader Joe's market in your area, they carry all of these brews.
Sierra Nevada Brewery makes a wide range of beers--not just the pale ale you usually see in stores--all of them are excellent.
Anchor Steam...San Francisco's beer. Great stuff!
Pete's Wicked Ale...another great beer from California.

My favorite beer is called Blackened Voodoo.Made by the Dixie Brewing Company. It is a dark lager, but suprisingly light bodied and smooth. It has the distinctive aroma of a European lager, but has subtle hints of chocolate and coffee. It leaves almost no after taste, and goes well with a nice steak. Try it.Enjoy it.Let me know what you think. Peace....

Hefenweisen is really good, throw a lemon in there.
