..does that mean that he spoke directly with the ocean, or the ocean telepathically showed him what to write. No. The why do fundies use this very argument to try and prove that the Bible is 'the Word'. My four month old inspires me to work even harder to better our lives, but that does not mean she has told me to do so. Although she is extremely advanced...LOL!

Very good point...although I am sure most "fundies" will not see it as that.

While the 400 year old King James version does use the word "inspiration" when it says every scripture is "given by inspiration by God", the author of the scripture used the Greek word "theopneustos" (the NT was written in Greek). "theo" is the Greek for God (where we get words like theology) and "pneustos" means to breath like a whisper. The Bible says much more than it was just "inspired" by the thought or beauty of God. It says it was whispered or breathed into them by God.
Oh, and note that at the time the King James was tranlated 400 years ago, inspiration still mean to have it placed "in" you by the "spirit" of God - inspiration. Sounds a lot like "God-breathed".

I think maybe you need to consider the fact that religion is mainly based on faith--at least Christianity. So, if you have the faith that God wants you to have, you wouldn't feel the need to ask a question like this. But then again, many people haven't felt God truely touch their lives directly. Lots of people like to think that they have what they have due to their own power, but if you believe in God at all--or even the concept of God--then who's to say God hasn't done awesome things for you, and you're too busy questioning Him to see and appreciate it.

It just means that when he saw the sea, the words just popped into his head. He could think more clearly about what he wanted to put down on paper when he was by the sea. His imagination grew stronger there.

sort of off topic, but did you know that the "secret bible code" when applied to the 'Old Man and the Sea' predicts the Kennedy assassination in Dallas? Praise to the Prophet Ernest :-)
