i got a bunch of bug bites (about 15; 8 on one leg, 7 on the other) and they are all swelling up. most of them are the size of quarters but some are as big as sand dollars. i have had this problem before but i put benadryl cream on them and they shrunk down. i put cream on these bites as soon as i got them and within hours, as usual, they were swollen to at least 3 times their original size. and now they hurt. at first they were itchy, but now it is painful to touch them. what should i do?

and to meimmoody: um, okaaaaaayy... and i'm the one who needs to be checked into a mental hospital?

Here is a modified answer I posted to a very similar question about wasp stings.

Hi, I'm an R.N. and I think I can help.

Firstly, this sounds like a local reaction and as long as you're not running a fever, having trouble breathing or swallowing, or have red streaks and swelling of your entire leg...you can probably treat this at home.

1. For itching/swelling: take Benadryl orally, 25 mg every 4-6 hours AROUND THE CLOCK until the swelling goes away and for 24 hours after the swelling goes away (to prevent it from coming back) should do the trick. But if you've never taken Benadryl before, you need to check with a doctor first. Benadryl can make you drowzy, so be aware, and careful. Putting Benadryl cream on damaged skin is not very effective, because damaged tissues can't absorb the cream.

2. Mix together baking soda and water to form a paste and smear in where you got bitten. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes. This will help soothe the sting site. You can do this several times a day.

3. Ice pack the bite areas for 20 minutes at a time with a couple of hours off, then repeat several times a day. You can use ice and do the baking soda paste at the same time.

4. DON'T SCRATCH...this will only break down the skin further, and may cause an infection.

5. See a doctor if any of the following occurs:
a) red streaking that goes up your leg
b) fever over 101
c) you have trouble breathing or swallowing
d) pus draining from the bite sites
e) swelling of your entire leg
f) if your entire leg get red and hot to the touch
g) if your symptoms don't improve in the next 3-5 days.

I think that you should go to the doctor. He will check you out and presscribe something that will really help. Benedryl is fine to use, you can also wash with an antibaterial soap to dry them up. Calimine Is good for things like that Its used for chicken pops and the mumps.

SOUNDS LIKE A SPIDER WAS SLEEPING WITH YOU OR BED BUGS. It could be other thing like sensitive hair follicles. When you shave do you often get bumps or pimples? Any who go to your doc because you do want this to go away and if it is left untreated you can develop a bad infection. Good luck

In answer to your origanal question only; Yes ! you need to see a mental doctor for thinking you can do anything you want to in the good ole USofA. You can cry that out from your jail cell when you are finally put there for breaking the laws of this great nation. People who think they can do anything they want to in this country can only skate by for so long, then they hit a brick wall.

*See what happens when you think you can do anything you want to, anywhere you want to. You are out of your culture.
