I drive a 97 Jetta GLS, 5 speed. I'm nearing 109k miles. I was wondering what the life expectancy is of the average clutch?

No, everything is running fine, I'm just curious as to how long before I can expect it to say good bye.

Um....the car is 9 years old and the clutch is fine.
And why post an answer that has nothing to do with it, I've got my contact up.

Stock clutch in my saturn lasted through two learners and moderate driving until about 150k. I've heard of them lasting longer, I've heard of them lasting as little as 60k. The average life expectancy is fairly uniform between makes and models. I believe my friends 95 Jetta has something like 180k on the stock clutch.

Is it doing anything that leads you to believe the clutch is going bad? Slipping? Shuddering? If not, it's fine. It really depends on your driving habits. If you slip the clutch alot, it's going to wear it out faster. If you constantly change gears in city driving, it's not going to last as long as someone who drives on the highway all the time. Do you stand on the clutch alot? This can cause premature failure of the pressure plate and/or throw out bearing. Extremely hard shifting can warp the flywheel and damage the throw out bearing.

If you don't abuse it, you can expect 200k out of a clutch. If you get a clutch with bad parts (My LUK replacement came with a faulty throw out bearing), you may have to get back in there immediatly. It's really up to the user, YMMV applies here quite well.

depends on your driving. If you dont sit a traffic lights in gear with clutch down, dont slip it a lot or hold on hill without using handbrake it will last a long time. I got over 180,000 in a diesel transit which was permanently overloaded (at least180kg overweight, someimes a lot more) without any problems (when I found out I changed jobs so I dont know how much further it went) VW are known for reliability and relativly cheap aftermarket parts (LUK clutches have been fitted std but cheaper without the VW box), the one I got for my old style Beetle was marked VW???

there is no average life on a cluth.Depends on the car,and your driving habits.I have a 1999 Passat with 115,000 miles.Clucth is worn but still good.A cluth wears similar to brakes. It can be inspected for wear, but you will know when it wears out.vwjcook@yahoo.com

about 5 years, depending on how much you drive...

Also, any oil will get hard when put in the refrigerator and I'm curious how long you put it in the fridge if it doesn't. If you NEVER have that problem, then don't answer the question...
