To paraphrase a couple commentaries ([John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible; and Jamiesson, Fausset, and Brown Commentary {JFB from here on}] which can be freely downloaded from www.e-sword.com), Chi=600, Xi=60, Stigma (an unused letter, an intermediate between epsilon and zeta, that's purpose was solely as a number)=6. It is akin to the Hebrew gematria of Balaam (a type of the False Prophet, one who uses his great spiritual powers for Satanic ends), whose numbers of his name also equal 666.

To quote JFB: "A and Vulgate write the numbers in full in the Greek. But B writes merely the three Greek letters standing for numbers, "Ch, X, St.“ C reads ”616", but Irenaeus, 328, opposes this and maintains "666.""

Six represents the number of the world, and of man (imperfect, sinful); seperated from seven (the number of perfection). As 12 is the number of the Church (originating from the 12 disciples), 6 becomes half of 12... the Church divided into the true Church and the apostate church. Since the number of God is 3, a triple 6 could be said to represent a man who seeks to be God (see Matt. 24:15, Daniel 9:27, Daniel 12:11, 2 Thess. 2:4, as the Antichrist fills that role).

As an interesting note, there is no pause between the 6th and 7th bowls, a pause of "about the space of half an hour" between the 6th and 7th seals, and a pause of "three and a half days" between the 6th and 7th trumpets (the span which the two prophets lie dead in the streets). A mirror, of sorts, of the repeating increments of the Antichrist's number.

In my own opinion, as a modern reference to the usage of Stigma as opposed to Hex... how often do we use the letter "x" for anything other than a "ten", "unknown amount/quality", "current generation", "extreme". It is a rarity we see it as a letter within a commonplace word, but rather, a vivid symbol within a phrase (consider "Generation X", "X-treme", "x-ray", etc). As it is in this case. The word "stigma" has its origins in "stizo" meaning "to prick, a mark (denoting ownership), a scar of service". The purpose to use Stigma over Hex is to drive home the point (pun not intended) that, as referenced in Rev. 13:16, the mark ("charagma") given to all of mankind that worships the beast will be directly related to the Antichrist's number/name. Akin to a Christian's cross/crucifix necklace or ichthys fish on their car, showing "This thing belongs to a Christian, and this Christian belongs to Christ", so too will the mark show "This marking belongs to a worldly person, and this worldly person belongs to the Antichrist".

If we replace "Six hundred, threescore, and six", with "sum of mankind", the entire phrase, sentence, verse, and symbology no longer makes sense, in English, or in Greek. My Biblical Greek is rusty, but, looking at the Greek manuscripts... "time anthropinos" (sum of mankind) looks nothing like "chi xi stigma" (six hundred sixty six).

If we take the mark as a literal visible marking on the hand or forehead... the sum of mankind, from Adam, up to this point in time, is an IMMENSE number (assuming 2 people give birth to 2 children during their first twenty years of life, and that represents a generation, over a period of 6000 years [being very conservative with estimates here]: first parents [Adam and Eve] are two, their children number [at least] four, their kids 8, theirs 16, theirs 32, ad nauseaum, doubling every generation, until we reach our current 6 billion people... there's that "6" again.). Now, writing "6,000,000,000" will take up a LOT of space on my forehead... a number that exceeds the trillions, will not fit on my forehead, let alone my hand. However, a 3-digit number that represents a single person could fit even the smallest of frames.

If you break down the letters individually, each letter has its own meaning. Also, the greek letters normally correspond with letters in both the Hebrew and English alphabets. Chi means "no" or "without"; there is no known letter in the alphabet/alephbet that corresponds with that letter. Xi corresponds with the Hebrew letter Samekh and the English letter X. Samekh means "support, to lean on, to uphold", Stigma is a combination of the Greek letters Sigma and Tau, which respectively corresponds with the Hebrew letters Shin and Tav. Shin means "to destroy" or "to devour", and is typically depicted as a person's two front teeth (incisors); Tav means "mark" or "signature", typically of a finished, complete or perfect work. When you put together the meaning of all of the letters, the code for 666, or Chi Xi Stigma, reads:

MARKED FOR DESTRUCTION, TO BE RIPPED APART/DESTROYED, WITH NO HELP OR SUPPORT FROM ANYONE OR ANYTHING

That's what you'll be taking on to yourselves if you take this mark!

Revelation 12:13:18 CJB - This is where wisdom is needed; those who understand should count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person, and its number is 666 (Chi Xi Stigma)

That person that the Scripture is talking about is the Antichrist. DON'T TAKE THE MARK!

Your absolutely right. The Greek word rendered 'cross' in many modern Bible versions(torture stake) is stau.ros'. In classical greek, this word mean merely an upright stake, or pale. Later it also came to be used for an execution stake having a crosspiece. The imperial bible dictionary acknowledges this saying : ' The greek word for cross,(Stau.ros') properly signified a stake, an upright pole, or a piece of paling, on which anything might be hung, or which might be used for impaling(fencing in) a piece of ground. Even amungst the Romans, the crux (from which our 'cross' is derived) appears to have been originally an upright pole. The book 'The Non-Christian cross' by J. D. Parsons says: ' There is not a single sentence in any of the numerous writings forming the New Testament, which, in the original Greek, bears even indirect evidence to the effect that the stauros used in the case of Jesus was other than an ordinary stauros; much less to the effect that it consisted, not of one piece of timber, but of two pieces nailed together in the form of a cross. Is it not a little misleading upon the part of our teachers to translate the word stauros as 'cross' when rendering the Greek documents of the church into our native tongue, and to support that action by putting 'cross' in our lexicons as the meaning of stauros without carefully explaining that that was at any rate not the primary meaning of the word in the days of the apostles, did not become primary significaion till long afterwards, and became so then, if at all, only because despite the absence of corroborative evidence, it was for some reason or other assumed that the particular stauros upon which Jesus was executed had that particular shape'
