I have a 11 month old golden retriever, recently he has become very aggressive towards other dogs, any dog he comes up on he tries to dominate, I dont know what happened along the line, hes very well behaved with kids and people, but its just other dogs that he gets violent with, he wasnt like this a month ago, could it be because we live alone? I am going to consult a police dog trainer this afternoon to figure out whats going on and what I can do. Do you have any suggestions?

Your dog is reaching sexual maturity and is getting the territorial behavior. This is normal.
Have the dog neutered and work with him on socialization.
Make it clear to him that the dog aggression is unwanted and a behavior that will not be tolerated by you.
Yes living alone and not letting him socialize with other dogs can make this worse.
Goldens are good natured dogs and most can be around many other dogs with no problems. They will have to work out the dominance thing when they first meet but after that is worked out everything should be fine.
Working with a trainer one on one is the best way to solve your problem They can see first hand exactly what is going an and will be able to get your problem fixed.
Good luck.

I had a young pup that I rescued when she was only 5 weeks old. She wasn't quite ready to be away from her mom, but she would have died otherwise. She gets the exact same way towards other dogs, now that she is getting older. I believe it is due to she didn't have much puppy interaction time. She is also very protective of me. I know it gets frusterating, but the best thing I have learned is to keep them interacting with other dogs. The more they are exposed, gradually the better she got. It also helped when my sister got a pit bull who wasn't intimidated by my dog, and helped put her in her place a little, while still being able to have fun with my dog. Good luck.

I am sure that the trainer will give you some insight as to what the problem is.. The dog(golden retriever) is aging and sometimes that bring about the territorial aspects. that is.. they guard their territory and will be a good guardian for his master and kids.. That is the most plausible answer

I would imagine that your dog has reached the stage in itslife where it realizes what his territory is and who he needs to protect which is you and your home. And he is probably smart enough to know that he isnt intimidated by chidren or other people. Other dogs are more of a threat. You can have this handled in public by simply having play dates for your dog however in your own home your dog may never feel comfortable with something entering.

It s a good idea to consuult with a police dog trainer. Did you socialize him with other dogs? I think because he's not always around dogs.

It's actually not uncommon behavior and there may not be much you can do to calm him down. He is becoming the alpha male and a close watch, with good handle on him, is important.

Have you had him neutered? I would suggest doing this. It will calm him down and help him behave better.

Is he like this with ALL dogs or dogs his size and/or larger? My Mal was like this with all other animals until we had her spayed. Now she is like this only with dogs her size or larger, but does well with smaller dogs and cats (provided they stay away from her food).

is he neutered? that's the most obvious question - - male dogs who aren't neutered go in stages of development (now he is getting more confident in himself)... another one: did he have a run in recently with any other dogs? often, dogs who go from passive to passive/aggressive do so because they were attacked or dominated recently. the *worst* thing you can do is keep him from interacting with other dogs. you need to keep socializing him (just make sure you tell other dog owners the situation, so they can help). he'll eventually find dogs who wont let him dominate them, and they'll tell him to back off (teach him his place). just don't isolate him further -- he has to learn and work out where his place in dog hierarchy is...

Is your dog fixed? Dogs are pack animals and they need to be dominated or dominate. Neuter your dog and this may help to calm him down. Also you can become the top dog by dominating him.
