I have a Belgian Shepard Mix and his hair down towards his butt is getting fluffy and coming out in the handfulls. Is this shedding season? Normal? I have another dog, but she doesn't have very long hair and doesn't really ever shed.

Yeah, its normal. It's summer! The dog will get hot if it doesn't shed.

Yes, it is natural for a dog to be shedding at this time of the year. Come to think of it, it's summer, it's hot, sticky and humid. Compare your dog to a person, think about his fur as a coat on a person. Wouldn't that person want to take his/her coat off in the summer, because it's nearly a 100 degrees outside? Same thing with a dog; a dog with long hair sheds more, because he has excess hair, whereas a dog with short hair doesn't need to shed because it already keeps cool with it's short fur. So the answer to your question is, it is definitely normal for your dog to shed it's fur.

YUP. Summer is the season in which dogs shed their undercoats. Get a doggie brush and brush it daily. It will leave a mess. I have a Siberian Husky and he sheds in every season. We have hardwood floors, and we can see how much comes of just from him walking. Your dog apparently doesn't shed year round like mine. You may have noticed that rubbing his back will make dog hair fly everywhere. Don't panic. It's normal. Just wait until fall and he won't shed as much.

The days are getting shorter and your dig will begin to shed out his summer coat so that the winter one can replace it.
This is normal.
Many dogs who live inside now shed almost year round but shed heavier in the late winter and early fall.

A dog has two coats. There is a under coat and a top coat. During winter they grow more hair and in summer they shed since the coat is heavy.

Indoor dogs shed year round because of the lighting and heating conditions in your house. Outdoor dogs probably twice. Around the fall and around spring.
