According to the U.S. Government, the Baltimore-Washington Combined Statistical Area is the 4th largest in the country, after NY, LA and Chicago. However, they also classify Baltimore-Towson and Washington-Arlington-Alexandria as two separate metro areas. Kinda confusing. But that's the official classification: in reality, the cities are only about an hour's drive apart and there are many outer suburbs that are halfway between and people commute to both cities from (for example Columbia or Laurel). Baltimore's airport is really Baltimore-Washington International. So in theory they're kinda the same area although the downtowns are very distinct too.
