It varies quite substantially depending on the airline. The fact is, there are literally thousands of decisions about each specific airplane that an airline has to decide when they purchase from an aircraft manufacturer. Often times, the manufacturer doesn't even do the final configuration themselves. Boeing and Airbus frequently contract other companies to do the passenger interiors of their airplanes, depending on what the customer wants. As such, the seating configuration may vary, the seats themselves may vary, the interior layout may vary, the numbers of passengers that a specific type of aircraft can carry can vary. It all depends on what the specific airline wants.

Airlines may choose their seating configuration, so it may be different depending on who you fly with. Generally (in coach) its 2 seats on each side of the aircraft, and 5 seats in the middle.

If you look at www.seatguru.com you will see that each airline has a slightly different arrangement. Interiors can be modified via tracks on the floor and ceiling.
