By "Clay" - you mean cob? (google cob builing for lots of good info. Cob is clay, sand and straw, mixed together and used like wet adobe. Strong, cool in summer, warm in winter, dirt cheap, and it won't burn down)
Good or bad itdea depends on the site. It needs good "shoes" and "hat" (Foundation and roof - one with more overhang), and definitely shouldnot be used in flood-prone areas.

There are builders who know how to make houses out of concrete- sort of artificial caves.
Now, there are houses made of clay in dryer parts of the world. The clay is called adobe, and some adobe houses have existed for hundreds of years.
It depends on where you want to put the house.

Depends on where you live.
If you live in wet or humid area, I doubt it will be a wise. But in dryer areas, it is a economic and environmentally sound alternative.
