I spent from Jan '04 to Jan '05 in Iraq. I had no problem going there. I agreed with the reasons for going. Even though we didn't find anything doesn't mean there wasn't anything. Saddam had months to destroy anything before the invasion.
Seeing how Saddam treated his people made me realize someone had to help. I know there are countries worse off than Iraq, but it wasn't caused by one man like in Iraq.
I have a great sense of pride in doing something that mattered. I'm out of the Army now and I look at the jobs available and they all are more concerned about making someone else lots of money.
I got out of the Army because my family couldn't go through another year long deployment. I love and miss the Army, but I love my family more.
I think the military is doing it's best with the resources given it. The Army could always use more people in any situation, but the Army just isn't big enough to do that. I don't know anyone that hasn't deployed at least once, and lately, most people I know have been deployed twice with a third around the corner.
If we pull out now, the country would be ruined. It would split into pieces controlled by all the different sects. The deaths of our soldiers would be meaningless. I've been to enough memorials for friends, I would hate to tell their parents your son died for nothing. Too bad our country couldn't pull itself together and fight through to the end. No matter the reasons for us being there, no matter how bad it looks.
In the end, the military is all volunteer. I joined before Sep. 11th, but I would join again knowing what my 6 years would have been like. I am continually impressed by the new young enlistees, it takes a lot of courage and conviction to join the military now. And I really hope that one day the people protesting the war now and telling the soldiers how wrong they are end up staying out of any elected positions because the war veterans are doing a better job than they ever could. They actually know what they are representing and fought for it.

Since you think you know everything, then tell us why we went to war??
You work for the president or something?? NO!! You DON'T!
So what you are saying is, we went to war just because we wanted to?? You are saying that if 9/11 wouldn't have happened, there was still gonna be this war??
I don't think so!! What a coincidence that we went to war after 9/11. What a coincidence that we are fighting in Iraq, Osama Bin Laden is from over there, and he was responsible for what happened in 9/11.
Could all those things just be a coincidence?? I don't think so!
We went to war because those bastards were responsible for what happened.
You really think we should do nothing and wait for another attack?? Once again, I DON'T THINK SO!!!

I'm not in the army but here's what I think: It doesn't matter if you're for or against the war---if you signed up for the army you should expect to fight. You can get mad all you want about all the casualties and things but they signed up for the army and if they didn't want to die at war they shouldn't have signed up.
Another thing, we're there because 9/11 right? People say "Oh, we shouldn't have gone to war with them" well what were we supposed to do after 9/11? Just sit back and let them do it again? I think not.

1st of all, lovelyemily, we did *NOT* go to war in Iraq because of 9/11... 2ndly, as a retired and disabled American Veteran, I'm ashamed of the leadership of this country. I completely support the troops, but believe that a structured withdrawl that is based on reaching tactical benchmarks would be the *best* option for this country at this point..
