I am trying to do a family tree..

Bardal is a hedge, the kind in Europe that is used as a fence made up of thorny buses. Bardales would mean something kind of close to Fences. Your family probably lived near a very large bardal, and took it as a family name. One of mine is Canales, which means Canal or Channel, they lived near Roman aquaducts.
