Old scraps of food, possibly poop... but maybe only vegtable waste. The containor would be maybe plastic or metal or something like that.

Would it make the containor pop or break (explode) if I just left it unattended with the gasses building up?

How do I make it NOT explode?

I don't want a sticky mess, but I don't know how to vent it out, or even know when I should vent it out (how often?).

I don't know...I would assume so because of the methane gas build up. But sounds like an interesting experiment you should try in you parents back yard!!! ;P

How the heck would the sunlight get into this closed container? Well, I guess it could if it was clear plastic. Yes, it would, but the explosion would not be violent. I suggest, if you want something worth watching, to find a more rapidly occurring chemical reaction.

Not sure how big an explosion you'd get but there certainly would be gas buildup. Well built landfills install vent pipes specifically to release the excess gas.

Yes, it will pop the container. You have to vent it. Either drill a small hole in the lid or don't put the lid on tight.

No, it will not explode, if it's just scraps of food, with or without some poop. Give it a try, you'll see what I mean.

What kind of waste? Oily rags? Radioactive? Garden variety? How strong is you container?
