I went to the dentist about a month ago and he said I have a cavity in my front teeth. Im 13 years old. Ive gotten cavity before, but now my mom says ill "probably not need the novocaine". I dont know if ive gotten the needle before in my past dentists and im worried it will hurt. I know my last dentist used a jelly thing to numb it well but i would know if he used a needle. What are the chances that I will need the needle, will it hurt bad?

Sound like it is a small cavity. Sometimes these can be fixed without needing to make them numb. If it is sensitive when they try to fix it they will most likely use a topical anaesthetic first (the jelly you are talking about) and then you won't feel the needle very much. Perhaps just a little bit of a pinch. The ones in your mouth are nothing like the needles you get in your arm, so you will be fine if you do need one.

If the cavity has got through the enamel and into the dentine then it sounds like you'll need to be numbed using a needle. Sorry! It really doesn't hurt THAT bad, it's like a sharp pinch in your mouth, but it only lasts a little while and then you go all numb - I'd rather suffer that than have a fillings done without being numb. But honestly, it's not that bad, and it's definitely better than leaving the cavity and it getting bigger - now THAT hurts a lot!!!

Well honey it is going to hurt a bit, but you can handle it!! The jelly stuff(topical) will numb the area a little, but when you feel the pressure and the prick just count to 5 in your head and the pain will be gone, the dentist(hopefully) will go real slow and by the time you count to 5 you should not feel anything anymore. I always tell my own kids the truth on whether it is going to hurt or not, so that is why I am telling you the truth......be a big girl, it will not be that bad.....you can do it.........and remember to FLOSS and BRUSH so you won't have to do this again!!! Good Luck

the needle doesnt hurt that bad at all. they put the jelly on to numb you first, then they stick the needle in. it feels like a small pressure but you honestly dont even flinch. i had a cavity on my front tooth awhile ago too and it was painless.
