My sister turned me on to this site http://www.youngexplorers.com and http://www.toyscamp.com they offer lots of cool learning things and they aren't to expensive, they have different things I'm sure you can find something on there. but I'd try something he likes, such as science (dinosaurs, microscopes) or video games or puzzles

LEGOs. There is a reason why these things have been around for years and years. They just seem to stimulate the mind of creative intelligent kids. They can be a creative tool for children to experiment with. They also function as a puzzle and lesson in instruction following if the child decides to build something in the book. I bought my 7 year old a creator series that makes 7 different dinosaurs at Christmas time and it was quite a hit. All of my boys love them. So they qualify as exciting, fun and treasure!
Make sure to buy a nice large plastic tub to put them in!

A good telescope.
A year membership to a children's or science museum or zoo.
Music lessons on something cool, like guitar or drums.
My 7 y/o is hard to buy for. All he wants is video games...

How about a big storage box filled with craft materials. You could include paints, brushes, crayons, chalk, all sorts of paper etc. That way, when friends come over they can work on projects together.

well...video games are a great gift for everyone....or look for educational toys, they make really cool k-nex type things now....or a gyroscope...those are fun......i dunno, i usually just look for a present that i would want to play with, and it works everytime. how about something the two of you could use together? or take him to an amusment park, that's a good present.
