Do you think that a Christian woman who chooses to dress modestly and simply in long skirts and shirts to the elbow and who wears a scarf on her head to show her submission to her husband as well as to remind her who she is and who she represents is being weird? or strange? What is so strange about choosing not to be a "slave" to fashion and immodesty?

I am not implying it is wrong to dress how you wish only that some people do not choose to spend time and money to worry or support fashion. There are other things in life.

And I dress this way by my own choice. My husband did not ask nor does he require.

A dress cannot be called decent which is cut deeper than two fingers breadth under the pit of the throat; which does not cover the arms at least to the elbows; and scarcely reaches a bit beyond the knees. Furthermore, dresses of transparent materials are improper."

If she chooses to be "modestly dressed" well, we should respect that and let her be.

I like clothes and can shop forever. We live in a society that look at the whole package. How you look can sometimes be interpreted to what kind of person you are and your personality.

I also believe that women on this day and age have more "free-will" as we say from women in the past. We are lucky that we were born now that the world somewhat recognizes women's potential to be equally adept and inept as a man or even more.

If she choose to be submissive, im sure thats her choice. I respect that.

This is the problem with modern day thinking. If you want to wear modest clothes, no make-up, and (God forbid) a scarf on your head, you are deemed to be a slave to your husband, father or religion. When will people realize that the true slaves are those who spend an hour or more in front of the mirror every morning making sure their hair and makeup is perfect (for men to oogle)? Why am I oppressed because I choose not to spend all of my money on clothing that famous people and fashion designers say I should like? Why should anyone dress little girls in clothes resembling those worn by Brittany Spears or pants that say "Juicy" on the butt? Does that not make pedophiles and child molestors go nuts?

I just remembered seeing one particular item at the mall once that sums this up in totality. An extremely simple (and very thin) fitted tee shirt with "BEBE" printed on the front. Price tag = $115. Nope, that's not a typo. And we're the brainwashed ones, lol!

the thing that sticks out most about this is not the slave to fashion, but the part about her being submissive to her husband. That is just wrong. No woman should be 'submissive', to yield oneself to the authority or will of another. If a christian woman wants to dress modestly because SHE wants to then fine, but to do it, even when you don't want to because some dude tells you to, then there is a BIG problem. The type of clothing you describe is typically what you see Pentecostal women wear. The men in that religion can wear whatever they want but the women have to dress like that and can't cut their hair either. I detest any religion that encourages men to think that they are better than women. It is just WRONG.

Simple answer: Yes and no. That is, the world will think she is weird, but remember that the world thought Jesus had a demon. (John 8:48) Following God's commands in the Bible is not strange to those who know the Truth. Just remember that while God is always right, His servants are not. Trust the Bible and examine everything, even what I'm writing against it and it only, with prayer to God for understanding.

Spoken as one who does dress in modest blouses and skirts. (And yes, some folks think I'm weird--but it always gives me a good opportunity to witness of why I am dressing the way I do.)

You can still dress up in a fashionable way without being immodest. I don't think it's strange, it's just unnecesessary. There is no reason to go to such lengths just to prove a point. Wear a cute turtleneck or something instead of a V-neck. Don't wear full length skirts but don't wear mini skirts either. Lots of people do it. Actions speak louder than words, but in this case that's too much.

The modest clothes are not strange. In fact, they are laudable.

However, wearing these clothes to show submission to her husband is ridiculous. Why should anyone be submissive to anyone else but God?

Why should women be submissive to men? We are equal!

I love my husband, AND I dress modestly. However, I dress the way I do because I want to -- not because of my husband.

I am okay with dressing modestly if that is what you are doing, but what about Muslims? That is not just about being modest and respectful to your husband. It is about being invisible. Their shoes can’t even make noise when they walk! I work in the health care industry and let me tell you it is real difficult. Men can’t touch or see a female patient or show them a picture of a human body and have them point to where it hurts. A female physician can examine them but only if a close male relative is present, which makes it difficult to find out the real reason a women is covered in bruises and has blood in her urine (and yes I have witnessed this!) This is what religion does, so is it just modesty?

I think choosing to show submission to anyone is weird. By wearing a scarf, even. I didn't realize this was the accepted method of showing submission in people.

I don't have an issue with modesty or choosing not to be fashionable... but submitting to "remind her who she is"??? What does that mean? I don't know if I can get that.

Sounds like you are trying to justify it to not only us, but yourself as well.....

The women who dress this way ..it is because they choose to..Most of you think it is cuz the husband orders her to do so..no Why is it so hard to understand that a woman really chooses to dress modestly and keep herself for her husbands eyes only.. It is good to have strong faith and abide by it willingly..

i don't believe a woman needs to be submissive to her husband. there's nothing wrong with immodest dress if that's what a woman wants. but she should do it for herself. not for her husband. there is plenty of 'fashion' out there that is modest. just look at the older models/movie stars like meryl streep or diane keaton.
