I would like to say it is because of the birth of Christ. But I have also spent a few years in an asian country where Christianity is in the minority, but Christmas is also celebrated. Store window displays were very extravagant -- Santa, snowmen, circus themes, anything but religious themes.
So I will say that Christians are happy about Christmas firstly because it is the commonly accepted time of His birth.
Aside from this (and this will now hold true for everyone else), exchanging presents and mass commercialism create a cheery effect on most people.

It certainly has to be all the selfishness and the pressure to go into debt buying presents. You can't name a worse holiday for stress and unhappiness ( more suicides than any other time of year). Perhaps you Christians can take this holiday back and make it into a religious holiday rather than the secular mess it has become.

Because at Christmas most people get a whole lot of gifts and stuff. But that's not the reason that you should love Christmas. I like it cuz it's Jesus's birthday and I get gifts and my birthday is 3 days later. It's awesome.

people get worked up about "the spirit of christmas" so the shop ownerrs go 'wow people are buying all my overpriced junk! IM MAKING LOTS Of CASH'
normal people are going 'i wonder what so and so is gonna get me...'
Its also the one holiday that even though all the religions hate each other they tend to fight less on the winter holidays because it doesnt seem right =T

Even pagan nations have a holiday around the winter solstice. It brings hope that the bad weather won't last.
However, we celebrate Jesus' birth as the hope that this world with all its sin an sorrow won't last either.

The giving and receiving of gifts. Christmas seems to bring families together. And, for all of us Christians, it's a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

this is just a theory.
most of us were taught/told as kids that Santa wouldn't bring us presents unless we had been good. Parents spend a lot more time correcting their children, and saying "no" than they do telling their kids that they ( the kids) are good people, or that the kids did good things.
When Santa brings presents, it validates that we ( kids) are good people, doing good things - or, at least, that we are good enough.
I think that feeling, that interpretation, affects most of us for the rest of our lives.

It is a time when God blesses us with an abundance of peace on earth and good will to men. It is a genuine spirit that I feel every Christmas.
