I want to help the environment by planting some trees but I don't know where I can plant them where it's legal. I have plenty of trees in my back yard already.

The best thing to do is to go find out what trees are Native are to your area, possibly through the Internet or local nursery. Find those trees and Plant them in Empty Fields that do not have property for sale or Realty signs. If you do it on Government land(land that is not owned by a person or company) They will probably consider it as a Favor or something they did not have to pay for and not care. But if you do not feel comfortable with that then you should ask your City Council at a meeting or Go ask the Town hall.

35 years ago I was planting trees with my sister's Girl Scout Troop (Mom was troop leader). She'd called up the city and the local park and they had areas they wanted planted. One brownfield sort of empty corner lot that was too small to build on. And a hillside in a park. Those Monterey Pines are 40 feet tall now and 2-feet in diameter. It is kind of cool to drive past them in the decades since.

You might give the local Scout council a call. The local troops are always looking for service projects and the city/park might have a greater familarity with working with scout groups. And then, strong young backs could dig and plant those trees. Maybe you offer to buy the seedlings, saplings, whatever.

In the U.S. the best resource is your local County Agricultural Extension Agent. Generally the USDA extension service folks can give you all the information you need about planting trees in your area and other local group projects.

Go big--draft up a grant proposal/resolution to allow you to plant trees on designated public land and submit it to your local government. Why not form a nonprofit 501c3 so that people can make tax-deductible donations to you to help with expenses? Nolo Press has a great how-to book for getting non-profit status.

You could make a flyer and offer to plant them for free...Maybe like an Adopt -A-Tree program. Pass the flyers out to friends and neighbors.
