When I work out inside, is it necessary to put sneakers on when I'm going to do things like squats, lunges, and jumprope? And also is it bad to run barefoot?

When exercising indoors, I don't think it's necessary to wear sneakers, assuming you're working out on carpet or a smooth surface. Students in a lot of martial arts studios workout and spar barefoot on wooden floors or mats. However, if working out on a hard surface, you may develop some callouses or blisters.

As for running outside barefoot, I've seen people do it, but I don't recommend it because you can easily cut or injure yourself, which may lead to a nasty infection, if not treated properly.

Running barefoot is very high impact and probably not a good idea for your feet or knees. You can do things like squat etc. barefoot without any risk. Many power lifters do this at meets and I don't know any of them who've had problems with weights as high as 900 lbs

It's not bad for you, it could just get painful after you do it for a while. Sneakers give you extra padding on your feet that would make doing exercises much less hard on your feet and knees, espeically with the high impact stuff that you're talking about. As for running, I wouldn't really recommend doing it barefoot. Who knows what you might step on while you're running outside. Basically, if you want your feet and knees to hurt less, you should wear shoes.

It is really bad to run barefoot. The only time you should be barefoot doing an exercise is doing yoga on a smooth surface.

For high impact exercising, it is bad, definatly. Low impact is less damaging to the feet & legs, and won't hurt your legs as much.

Yes, running barefoot is bad. Think of driving around in a car without shocks to soften each bump you go over. Running without padding on your feet jars your legs, bones, and muscles much more than necessary.

I don't think it is necessarily bad for you exercise barefoot, because we came in this world barefoot... Shoes are man made... however... it is safer to exercise with shoes on... they support you ankles, and give you stability. You have a less likely chance of sliding, or slipping while exercising if you are wearing shoes with good soles on them. Less likely to twist your ankles, also.

Barefoot is fine. Keep it up.

Ignore the folks who only wear shoes and don't know any better.

I wouldn't run for long distances barefoot - it can damage your arch. But anything else I think would be fine. I do martial arts and work out barefoot all the time.

well those stationary exercises wouldn't seem to matter much..wearing tennis shoes is going to feel better of course because of the support. I don't think it would be bad for you but maybe less comfortable.
