Christians are baptized "into" Christ, They spiritually share One Spirit. They are connected like branches on a Vine, with the Life of the Spirit moving through them and nourishing them, producing the Fruit of the Spirit. It's the same when it's pictured as a "Body" having different parts (branches) and one Life moving in all the different parts. When a church is truly connected to the Holy Spirit and Christ is truly it's Head, then His life will manifest through it and create His Life in it, and the Fruit will be the proof.

The "host" symbolizes the body of Jesus Christ that was offered in sacrifice on the cross; the body that was broken for the world. The "cup" symbolizes the vessel holding the blood of Christ that was shed for the remission of sins, our redemption, our salvation from eternal death and hell.
"Do this in remembrance of Me", (1 Cor 11:23-25)
The Church Body----is the Body of Believers. Too often, when we here "The Church," we think of Catholics. Fortunately, Jesus Christ taught us that "the church" consisted of all of those who were faithful believers who followed his teachings, who were disciples of Christ.
Jesus never instructed that "The Church" should set itself up as a powerful, rich, corrupt, political corporation. On the contrary. The Church body, the body of believers, were to be fed in the Word and fellowship with other believers and then go out into the world and spread the gospel.

1 Corinthians 6:19 & 20 "or do you no t know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have from God and you are not your own? For you are bought with a price therefore glorify god in your body and in your spirit, which are God's" It is used as a picture of the church because a body without arms or legs can't do much. Just as one person by him/her self can't do much. Each member of a church has different functions. Some sing, some preach, some evangilize, some answer questions on yahoo.

Originally, the concept of Christ was mystical. In the original Christianity, Christ was not a human being names Jesus, but was an "enlightened" state of being, and all those who believed were considered members of the body of that state of being, known as Christ. This was also the original meaning of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Later on, all the Jesus mythology was tacked on as Christianity transitioned from mysticism to literalism.

The body of Christ is the church. It is an illustration for us to better understand how we function. Christ is the head.

Paul referred to Christians collectively as the body of Christ. He also talked about how the body interacts with itself, how every part has a function and job to do. In the same sense, every Christian has a role in the Church (speaking about the worldwide collection of Christians) We all have different gifts that God endows us with that we're to use to further God's kingdom to bring others to Christ and enrich their and our relationships with God.

everyone has different tallents. Some are good in sports, others are good with politics, and so on. just like you would not use your ear to taste your food, you wouldn't have someone who stutters, be a inspirational speeker. Every part of your body performs a distinct function. By its self, it may not seem very important, but without those parts we couldn't function properly. (ask someone whose lost a hand.) Just like our body parts, we all work together for one common goal, Doing God's work. Great question.
