I tried all the things my doctor recommended me to do, and found no relief. The medications hardly work for me. Sure they take away the heartburn for a time, but they caused me massive amounts of pain. Not to mention how expensive they are. Nexium is probably the best on the market right now. If you're still having troubles, speak to your doctor. He's more qualified to give medical advice.
As for simple relief of heartburn, eat plain vanilla ice cream. Dairy products help neutralize some of the acid, and coat your stomach and esophagus. Stay away from acidic food like tomatoes, citrus fruit, onions, things like that. Don't put pressure on your stomach. Wear loose fitting clothes that don't bind your waist. When you bend over, bend your knees not at your stomach. Avoid soda, alcohol, and caffeine as much as possible. Always keep Tums or Rolaids near by. I was prescribed Zantac in addition to the other medication, but speak to your doctor before taking anything else.
There's not much else out there that'll help. I worked in a vitamin/nutrition store, and I tried most of the remedies that were suggested in the books. Futilely I might add. The best advice I can give you is take what your doctor prescribes, try the lifestyle changes, and milk and ice cream.
