I think the real question is why do you take it so literal? If man has translated it over and over again from various languages throughout time, then part of the meaning becomes lost in translation, also part of the bible was coded so the government wouldn't persecute the relgious believers. How much of those codes were understood as time passed? I think your question is too simple. Finally where did you find your statistic? Did you make it up and if you did, what other things do you make up concerning the bible? Perhaps your own interpretations? Are you a theologian with years of bible study? Do you have an education at all? I don't mean to attack you, my apologies, it's just this statement gives the impression that Americans are stupid and I don't believe that is the case at all. We question and in questioning it means that we must have faith or we wouldn't even bother discussing the bible at all.

Is asking questions wanting to better understand what I have read "attacking" it?

I would like to know how you define "attack," because for some the mere act of questioning is an attack. Or, more particularly, asking a question to someone who can't answer it makes them feel "attacked", but that doesn't make it so.

I've spent a good part of my life reading the Bible. But, sacreligiously, I've read lots of other religions scriptures too. Not to mention a whole lotta stuff that has nothing to do with religion. And not just reading (like one reads a menu), but actually studying (which includes asking questions).

And now I am so danged addicted to Yahoo! Answers that I don't spend much time doing anything else at all. Yahoo! Answers is EVIL - beware!

If 92% have a Bible and they aren't all reading it, they aren't all attacking it either. I believe only a small vocal percentage of people actually attack the Bible. Many simply don't care one way or another and don't hold it in the same reverance as those who live by it do.

I don't have any Bibles in my house right now but I have read 3 versions cover to cover as well as several other books explaining the Bible and history in context, taken classes at churches and Universities and listened to many experts. At this point I can totally respect anyone that has a Bible but chooses not to read it since it is all a load of crap anyway and it doesn't really make much difference.

I have one, I have read it, I was born an raised a Roman Catholic. As for today, I now am an atheist. I have come to learn it is a man-made book. Nothing makes sense and no-one can truly explain anything with being direct. When ever an explanation is asked or doubts come... everyone that has been asked has to beat around the bush or give an excuse. It is just a bunch of stories that is all. I think of it as a book that has created many different cults.

So what you are saying is that 92% of people attack the Bible. That should be none of your business unless it personally affects you.

I don't consider my bible everyday reading simply because I spent many years in Catholic school and I prefer recreational reading of other things since I already have the religious foundation.

Thats an untrue stat. The fact is that these nutty people have several bibles in their house and this skews the numbers. The bible is about as true as harry potter and one does not need to read the book before you can dispute the contents.

I refer to it...I don't sit down and actually read it because with all due respect it's a crappy read. The bible is a storybook filled with allegorical, metaphorical readings that are hard to fathom and absorb let alone make out to be real in any way shape or form. Now, if you consider that an attack than that's okay with me...I think I am being respectful in stating my opinion of the book. It's dated, archaic, and needs to be ignored. PEACE!

I've got several Bibles, I do read them and have better sense than to attack the true Word of God.

People normally don't attack that which they understand, it is very normal for us to attack that which we are ignorant of.

If people read and studied the Bible they would find a story of a loving God that cares for all people so much that he gave his only Son to die for them.

Where did you get that statistic?? I don't have one in my house, and I know of quite a few friends that don't have one in theirs..

Either way, it's just a fictional book... any semi-intelligent person SHOULD realize that all the stories in the bible are way too far fetched to even be remotely true.

If I read anything, it'd be an encyclopedia - aka something based on FACTS!!
