I have some liquid crystals that I got from my chemistry teacher and they change colors when the tempature changes. Is this the same kind of stuff they use in LCD t.v.s? If so then they use tempature variations to change the picture on the screen?

There are many types of liquid crystals. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystals

The temperature/color-changing type are not the same as the electric field/polarization-changing type.

A lcd (regularly abbreviated lcd) is a skinny, flat show gadget made out of any type of colour or monochrome pixels arrayed in front of a delicate source or reflector. that's prized via engineers because of the fact it makes use of very small quantities of electric powered ability, and is as a result suitable to be utilized in battery-powered digital instruments. each and each pixel of an lcd contains a layer of perpendicular molecules aligned between 2 clean electrodes, and a pair of polarizing filters, the axes of polarity of that are perpendicular to a minimum of one yet another. devoid of liquid crystal between the polarizing filters, gentle passing by way of one clear out could be blocked via the electrodes.

I don't know. It would have to be some very rapid temperature changes. I don't know the temperature range of the crystals, but imagine going from the color at the lowest temperature range and chaning to the color at the highest temperature range. Like I said, I don't know the temp range...regardless, changing to a precise temperature in a fraction of a second is seemingly impossible. Especially when you factor in the environment surrounding the tv.

I don't think they are the same kind. You wouldn't want your display to change color depending on temperature.
Crystals in LCD monitors change from black to white when you put an electric voltage over them. In front of the chrystals there are red, blue or green filters to give the colors.
