He sounds like he's right on cue. Look at websites like babycenter.com to get an idea of what the exprts are saying. If he's not having any hearing problems, he's probably right on target. You can expand his vocabulary by talking to him a lot. Ask him questions and point out interesting things. Singing is another way to expand their vocabulary, as are picture books. We got our son Leap Frogg's DVD, "Letter Factory" when he was 18mos bcause a friend recommended it. He could say all of his letters and their sounds within two weeks even though his vocabulary was limited. It's an amazing DVD.

I laughed when I read your question because my 16-month-old son says the exact same words! He says "dat" for "that" and "shoe" sounds more like "shuh."
My pediatrician says that he's doing great so I'm sure yours is fine too. As far as knowing if your child is really smart for his age, there are so many factors that go into knowing whether a child is "gifted" and you don't know for sure until they are a bit older.
I think this time of expanding vocabulary is so much fun so enjoy your little guy. He sounds cute and like he's doing great!

well, there is no yardstick to measure a 16 month child talkitiveness.but it is mainly depends up on how the parents interact with them. as children are copy cats of parents. the more we talk and spend with them the chances are more that they speak faster. but generally girls speak a little more than boys of same age. i think if parents are both working then the responsibility of makig the child learn is in the hands of grand mother.so if the mother or grand mother is more talkative then there are more chances that the child speaks more words.

My oldest boy didn't start speaking until he was 2, not a single word. When he finally decided to we couldn't get him to stop. By 2 1/2 he was reading and is now an A student. Don't worry about it, when your little guy is ready he'll talk.

Do not fear. I thought my daughter had a problem because she didn't talk half as much as other babies her age, and now I wish she couldn't sometimes LOL. I can't even go to the bathroom without hearing"ya poopin mom--ya peeing mom--Flush the potty mom" It will come. Just talk to him and read him lots of books. That's the best way to increase his vocabulary!!

That's sufficient enough, once he/she get's to about 18 Months, he/she will probaly be speaking about 30 recognizable words.

he's just fine!
my 19 mos old girl talks a lot like "i want to eat", "mommy cook egg", "bye bye see you!", "Sun hot hot!", "mommy hug me" etc
however, boys tend to speak later than girls do. so don't worry. he is right on track. few months later he might be able to combine 2 words and eventually more than 2 words are spoken.
