There are quite a few colour change stones. Some in the Garnet family, others in the Sapphire family. There are some famous ones: Alexandrite - Chrysoberyl family - changes from green to red in daylight to artificial light. These are Dichroic stones, all are rare and very expensive. However, Alexandrite has been produced artificially since about 1908.
Other stones - Pleochroic - appear different colours depending on the angle they are viewed from. The most well known of these is Tanzanite whose colour of blue/lilac changes and deepens depending on the angle viewed.
My favourite is Andalusite that shows all three colours of the traffic lights depending on the angle viewed.

an opal changes colors depending on how you turn it, and has lots of colors, including pinks and blues. But it is not a hard stone at all, in fact it is quite fragile.

Sounds to me like a tourmaline, or more technically, a "tourmalike" which is a lab-created tourmaline. It changes colors from amythist purple in normal light, to a blueish color in flourescents. These are really awesome when put in fish tanks, especially if you have 2 light strips, you can put a "sun lamp" and a typical flourescent bulb in the tank to create a stunning effect. It also makes the fish change colors too.
