I took a big frame and stapled silky fabric to the back of it, then hung it up. After that, I hung an old plastic cherub that I repainted in the center of the frame. It turned out so good!

Tweak this idea to work in your livingroom:
In the bedroom of my last house I had ornate empty frames on the walls. Inside I hung, directly on the wall, beaded evening bags and vintage jewelry. It looked very textural and set off both the frames and the pieces inside.
Use one of three elements inside your frame in your livingroom:
1-Hang framed black and white photographs inside the frame. It will be more interesting if they are of different sizes and shapes. The uniting figure is the color of the frames-spray paint them all flat black, for example.
2-Use various pieces of art, allowing the uniformity of the frames to pull it together visually while the art is all different. Pen and ink drawings, architectural renderings and charcoal drawings are excellent together.
3-My favorite: Use mirrors of different sizes and shapes. Hang one of the small square mirrors sideways so it looks diamond shaped. Mix ovals, rectangles circles, squares. Again, make the color of the frames identical to pull the look together. Or stick to two or three key colors that would work in the room.
If the hanging wire of your picture frame shows, remove it and hang the frame from a small invisible nail. Install a sawtooth hanger on the back if necessary. (Sometimes it will hang on a nail without that.)
Lay your large frame on the floor and arrange all the elements inside, standing on a chair or table to get a good view. This is an easy way to see how they look together and to get the best balance. Sketch the layout on paper so you have a reference when you start hanging.
Use the type of hangers that are in two pieces-a nail and a seperate hook that requires the nail to go in at a downward angle. These are stronger and preferable to regular nails or tacks. (There are push-in tacks that do the same thing, go in at an angle with a hook to hang from.)
Good luck. With some creativity you can have a great focal point that is not the norm.

2inches by 3 inches? How big is your couch? I mean you could draw a little stick man in that space. Or maybe you could draw a representation of your talent - just hurl ink from a fountain pen across the paper and make some cool blotches.
Don't you worry my little in artistic friend talent is not a pre requisite for being paid lots of cash in the art world - I mean look at David Hockney - just put colour to canvas and the longer you can keep a straight face the more the cash will flow.

i read a really cool article about decorating on no budget. the idea that stuck in my head that i loved was finding retro or really any kind of wrapping paper you like and frame it. think you can get a roll for like a buck and change it from time to time for like no money. or you could even get an expensive roll and for decorating purposes it'd be a steal.

Have some friends over, and set out some water color paints. Have each of your friends add to the picture with whatever they want. I've gotten some really cool pictures this way!

Leave it totally white except for the signature and date in the bottom right corner. Title your masterpiece The Yeti in the Blizzard.

Pick some colors that compliment your couch and do splatter paint like Pollock used to do. It will look great I swear!
