how many pups are in an average litter?

Australian shepherd, im a member on showdog.com and my australian shepherd is pregnant, and its due tomorrow!

I whelped my first litter this year and 6 was a good number. The experience was wonderful but not something I will be doing again for awhile. I hope you might also get the same...

It depends on the type of dog. Smaller breeds have fewer pups like 2-5. Larger and medium breeds have like 4-12 sometimes. Alot depends on if it's the first time...first litters are smaller but then older dogs have small litters. Sometimes it just depends on the dog. We had a Treeing walker who had four litters of pups. First there were 7, then 10, then 12 then 4. So it varies from dog to dog, I guess.

what breed?
small dogs (yorkie and such): 1-3...4 is a huge litter

Med dogs (mini schn, cocker and such): 1-5...6 or more is a huge litter...Mom-in-law had 9 mini schns

Large dogs (rotti, German shepard, etc): 1-8...sometimes 10 or 12 (pretty rare)

Extra Large (Great Dane, etc): 1-10 is normal, but could have up to 15-18 pups...our GD puppy came from a litter of 10

It does depend on the breed. Some are known to have up to 8 while others sometimes only have 2. It just depends.

It really depends on the breed. Small dogs seem to have smaller litters than bigger dogs that can have as many as 20. If you are concerned about how many puppies your dog is going to have, contact your local vet to discauss having a altrosound.
