I've done it before when I was younger. As far as I know, it's safe. If your son asks you to eat it with him, you could always try melting a bit of cheese on top to help it taste better.

It'll probably be stale, but it's a grain, and not really much different from eating week-old bread or muffins. I worked at a movie theatre in high-school, and at the end of the night, when we were tossing all the leftover popcorn, sometimes we'd fill a bag for ourselves to take home. You can revive old popcorn by heating the oven to about 300, spreading the popcorn on a cookie sheet and baking it for 10-15 minutes or so. The popcorn gets soggy and stale because it absorbs moisture from the air, so "toasting" it in the oven helps draw out the moisture it has absorbed.
I'm sure at some point, popcorn becomes unsalvagable, but this trick works for day old popcorn!

When you buy popcorn from the snack aisle at the supermarket - I think it's a pretty safe bet that the popcorn is more than a week old.
I don't believe movie theaters pop popcorn fresh everyday - in fact, most of it is brought in in large bags - who knows how old it really is.
As previous answers have said - if it has been kept from contaminants, it is safe.

it is safe - like the other person said, if there aren't bugs. so i would only eat old popcorn that had been sealed.
it gets less crunchy and more chewy as it ages. 24 hours old is about my limit.

I don't know about a week old, but a day old, sure. It looses a lot of its crunch factor, but it's still ok. I think any longer and it would taste like soggy styrofoam.

I guess it would be ok as long as bugs haven't crawled on it.
