Abraham is the father of the Jews and the Muslims. He was 100 years old and his wife was 90. God told him that he would give birth to a son (they had no children at this point) and that his descendants would number more than he could imagine. His wife told him to go and have "relations" with her handmaid and Ishmael was born. However, this is not what God wanted and later Abraham and Sarah did have a son named Isaac. Isaac's sons were Esau (the Edomites) and Jacob (later named by God Israel). By saying they are children of Abraham, they are saying that they are descendents of Abraham.
That is a very very abridged version of the story. Read the book of Genesis for more information. It is a really good story.

Abraham is a servant of God, the husband of Sarah, the father of Isaac[the promised child] and the father of FAITH. He is the father of FAITH in the sense that at his old age, he believed that there is nothing God cannot do. Anybody saying he/she is a son or a daughter of Abraham is saying at the same time that he/she is a son or a daughter of FAITH meaning that he/she has FAITH in the Lord. Finally, it is not another name for God.

Abraham was a man who chose to obey God and was blessed with the nation of Israel as his descendants. He was a servant of God and not God.

He was the pagan that had many descendents. Descendents whose beliefs over the centuries changed, and eventually coalesced into the Judeo/Christian religion.
