reading to him or her is the number 1 thing, for sure
depending on his/her age, one or 2 toys by fisher price are great. be careful not to buy too many, it will have a bad influence on attention span.
i'm so glad you asked this!
really, buy books. they won't know or care if you are a great reader, and it will help them immeasurably to hear the march of words, see the pictures over and over, and spend time being in your arms and getting your full attention

The toys aren't terribly important. The child's intelligence is what it is. But the way that the child puts the toys and intelligence together can make a big difference. Interestingly, the child will do a pretty good job without adult interference, but what fun would that be. Your job ought to be to introduce "interesting" toys. Your child will let you know what's interesting! You can't think for the child, but you can try to encourage the direction his thinking will follow.

Toys that make the child think (puzzles). Toys that involve the child's motor skills (like coloring books). Toys that promote the child's imagination. Toys and/or games that involve the child in a family setting (family games and family activities).

Books are very good for children. There are also a lot of videos like Brainy baby and baby einstein that help but you want to limit them because person interaction is so important. Also Leapfrog has a lot of great products for your child's mind. We have the fridge phonics from leapfrog. They are ABC magnet that teach children the letters and sounds each letter makes. And my 2 year old son knows all his ABC's by recognition. Now when we go out he points to the different signs and names the letters.

My number 1 and all time favorite are "Lego block" this makes creative kids, also crayons, colored pencils, finger paints so they learn to express themselves and for creativity. And my last but not least would be a puppy, this will help in responsibility, love for nature, and will make your child go out doors to play, something very difficult to get a child to do in this days with so much technology inside the house( game boy ,x box, PlayStation,TV computer, etc.)(not against them)BUT ON TOP OF ALL, your love and your time to sit around his favorite toy and enjoy with him. believe...mother of three; 14,15and 20 year old "kids."

It won't come from toys it will come from your mental stimulation. My smartest childs favorite toy was a band-aid box filled with a few pennies. A noise maker like no other!
