Hell is the grave. All who die go there. Jesus has the keys to hell and all those in hell will be resurrected either to life in heaven or to life on earth. Hell will be done away with as will death itself. God is love and does not torture anyone.
This is what the Bible teaches and it a real comfort to know that the dead are only sleeping and will soon be awakened to be reunited with their loved ones.

I agree with Sartre - think that Earth and its people is a living hell and whatever's next must surely be better.

There are four hells
Hades a Greek word meaning grave but translates to hell
The grave is a place where the body turns back to the soil slowly.
A place outside of heaven (outside the walls of heaven) divided into 2 sections separated by a gulf.
One side WAS the lap of Abraham where those who were not perfect in the law but believed in a savior to come rested. (Empty after the crucifixion of Christ).
The other side are those who are likely to die.
The fourth hell is on earth, at the last judgement a lake of fire will be formed on earth just outside of Jerusalem. Those judged by God and found wanting will be thrown into the lake and die. This is the 2nd death

The word hell, originally translated from hebrew, means: Oblivion. That is, completely ceasing to exist, being cast into nothingness for all eternity. I think that makes the most sense from a biblical standpoint. God loves his children, so why would he want them to suffer, even if they renounce him. If you don't believe in judao-christian themes, there is also the idea of an "underworld" from various old mythologies, and many pagan sects and relgions thing that "hell" is actually the paradise and that heaven is the punishment... etc.... etc.........

Hell is what you make of your life when you don't abide by the SECULAR laws set down by Society/Government. If you live a life of deceit, conceit, thievry, hatred, predjuice, etc. than your life will be hellish. Conversely if you live respecting others and the environment; having compassion and empathy for the needy; loving those closest to you than you'll enjoy a Heavenly life. HEAVEN AND HELL ARE IN THE HERE AND NOW! They aren't places you go when you croak. PEACE!

A figment of sick and twisted guilt. Morbid facination with punishment for preceved wrongs. Dante worked long and hard to flesh out his horror and create the Hell we know.
Hel was once just the absence of god. Now it is corporal punishment gone extreme.
or...
Hell is experiencing every evil little thing you have ever done to another from stepping on an ant to cheating on your partner. All the pain ever inflicted by you coming back to you to experience.

Hell to me is complete and permanent separation from God. Many people may think that isn't really a bad thing. I respect that. But when I die, if I am wrong about heaven and hell, I have lost nothing.

Repetition without change. It is the core of addiction, obsession and delusion. You keep doing the same (bad) thing over and over and over again, expecting a different result (i.e. the good one you want), when all you ever get is bad results and worse. This is also taken as the definition of being in hell -- stuck in one rut or one dead end street for all eternity.

If there is such a thing as a non-corporeal afterlife, where we are completely aware of the result of our actions in life,
Hell is knowing all the PAIN we caused to others
Heaven is knowing all the PLEASURE we gave to others.
