Well technically they were flamers but the Lord didn't like that and also when fire and brimstone came down, they could have caught fire. If they were on fire for God in the ginuine sense then they would be right with Him and praising Him and they wouldn't have the problem that they faced.

God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah bc of their sin. If you read Genesis, you'll see that two angels that came to Lot's house looking like men. It says that all the men in the city came to his house wanting them to come out so they could rape them. This was an evil city, that example makes that clear. So, God's patience with them ran out, and he killed them. That may seem hard to some, but real justice is cold, hard, and unrelenting. It is a hard thing to accept.

I feel sorry for them , though.
If they had warning, maybe it could have been a really interesting style of barbeque party. They'd have to run fast with the meat of choice on a large plate strapped to their heads. Safe and cooking, Bam, kicked it up a notch.
