I am trying to arrange to meet a friend from Australia, and he has suggested somewhere in southeast asia. Which country is the safest in terms of crime, corruption, and natural disasters? I am travelling from the UK and on a budget!

I can easily tell you that Singapore is far and above the safest country in the region. However, most other nations are safe, especially Vietnam. Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines are all moderately safe, there are just parts of the country that should be avoided. Indonesia is the one risky spot. Though nearly all the time it makes a fabulous tourist destination, and if you went you would probably be totally safe, there are serious safety concerns in the country. In general, as with traveling anywhere, be aware of your surroundings, stick to busy well lit areas, and know where you are headed. Also, the entire region is prone to earthquakes, and there are dangers with Tsunamis, but be aware of the warning signs and know what to do in case of a disaster. Where ever you pick to go, I am sure you will be fine.

I think Singapore and Malaysia are good. most of the people can speak english so you would have no trouble in comunication.

Thailand is good as well, but the environment is not very good, noisy, not very clean in the city and people are not very fluent in english compared to the countries above. but if you would like to experience the real feeling of southeast asia, Thailand is the very place to visit. i like the two countries but personally my favorite is Thailand. you can feel something totally different from the two countries and what you have never done in england or other part of europe(hard to explain but why not just try it?). short stay in Bankok(the capital city in Thailand) won't make you exausted because of the difference of the environment. if you have time and want to try a bit more, nice to visit such as Ayutaya. lots of ruins of Bhudism. worth taking a look at.

hope this helped you.

SINGAPORE without the slightest doubt.

Singapore is south-east Asia's hi-tech, wealthy city-state. The country comprises the main island - linked by a causeway and a bridge to the southern tip of Malaysia - and around 50 smaller islands.

Once a colonial outpost of Britain, Singapore has become one of the world's most prosperous places - with glittering skyscrapers and a thriving port.

Most of its people live in public-housing tower blocks. They enjoy one of the world's highest standards of living.

Chinese make up more than 75% of the community; Malays and Indians make up much of the remainder. There are many foreign workers.

Singapore is often referred to as one of Asia's economic "tigers". Its economy has weathered regional crises, including the 1997 Asian markets slump and the 2003 Sars virus outbreak.

You shouldn't be too concerned with crime and corruption, but mostly how many people are going to charge you more because you're a foreigner. From my perspective even countries in the ME are relatively safe. I recommend Malaysia or parts of Indonesia (which are hotspots for Australian tourists). And natural disasters shouldn't be a problem, I recommend that lovely tropical paradise, Sulawesi. ;) But seriously you can't go wrong with Bali. I say, don't fret about it, google where you think will be nice, find the most beautiful one and plan your trip there. In all likelihood there will be no majour earthquakes, tsunamis, revolutions or terrorist attacks! Just make sure there are enough foreigners and foreign guides so that you won't get ripped off (and that's the case with almost anywhere u go).
