Sometimes it's best not to say, anything, just be there for your friend.

But there are three words that are useful whenever things get hard: "Let me help."

Good luck, and I hope your friend feels better.

The only thing you should plan to say is "I'm sorry for your loss", then let them do the talking. They might want to talk; they might not have much to say - the important thing is to be there for them, and make yourself available to talk if and when they want to.

Don't worry about messing things up. Just listen, and ask questions. Let them guide the conversation.

Sometimes the best thing is to DO something kind for them. You can send them a card, or come over with dinner, run an errand for them, mow their lawn, anything....as long as you show you care, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

The worst thing you can do is nothing. People translate that to mean you don't care, even if you do. Even something small is far better than nothing at all. I wish both of you well during this time of loss.

There isn't anything you can say really... just be there for them and make sure she knows if she needs anything that she can depend on you

Go up to your friend and say, "I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can do for you?"

Did he die of cancer? Heart disease? Whatever it was, you can make a donation in his name instead of flowers.
